Olin Baja 2019-2020
Who We Are: Olin Baja is a student-run team of about 30 undergraduate engineers from Olin College of Engineering. Each year, we design and build an off-road race car that we compete with in SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) competitions all over the country against teams from around the world. While students begin hands-on projects immediately at Olin, Baja provides excellent opportunities for team members to build on skills learned in the classroom and gain valuable hands-on experience from an industry-relevant engineering project. As part of the Olin Baja philosophy, we prioritize the first year student experience, and each member is able to and encouraged to design, fabricate, and assemble their own parts that go onto the car- something many teams don't do. At competition we race against over 100 other teams in a 4 hour endurance race that is designed to break your car, and continuously improved our performance over the last three years. This experience opens up many internship and full-time opportunities for our team members and we are very proud of our many alumni who are now working for major engineering companies.
What We're Doing: This year we are attending competition in Louisville, Kentucky during May, and potentially attending a second in Illinois during June. Our team is raising funds in order to build the car and get us to competition. This year we are re-using the same chassis design as last year, and using this solid base to focus on quantitative testing and more in-depth analysis for our other subsystems. Our chassis team is diving deep into body panel design and fabrication using fiberglass lay-ups, which is a new method for our team! The drivetrain team is working on tuning the continuously variable transmission, and doing failure analysis and materials testing on the gearbox input shaft, a part that has failed multiple times at competition. The suspension team is doing physical testing of specific parts with redesign focused on lightweighting and increasing strength. The electrical team is working on building a robust sensing suite to give data like wheel speed and gearbox temperature. Olin Baja is constantly iterating and improving our designs, and we hope to continue moving forward with this year's iteration!
How You Can Help: Competition is expensive, with transportation, hotels, and registration fees, but it is also an incredibly valuable learning experience for our team members. Our team aims to bring as many students to competition as possible, and although Olin is one of the smallest schools at competition we often bring one of the largest teams. We do not receive any financial support from Olin College, relying solely on sponsorships and donations from parents, alumni, parents of alumni, and supporters of the team to fund our design and competition goals. We would love your help to raise $8,000 to create our vehicle and get the entire team to the competitions this year.
Please donate to support all of our hard work, and welcome to the Olin Baja family!
